H1N1 Flu Update
El Paso, Texas – A 66-year-old male and a 28-year-old female, both from East El Paso, are the county’s 12th and 13th 2009 H1N1 influenza-related fatalities, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health reported today.
Both individuals were recently hospitalized with an influenza-like illness. Laboratory tests confirmed each had the H1N1 virus. The cases are not related.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of these individuals,” said Michael Hill, Director of the City of El Paso Department of Public Health.
The Department of Public Health encourages the public to follow these precautions to keep from getting and spreading the flu:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after there is no longer a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
For more information about H1N1 Flu the public may call 2-1-1.

2009 H1N1 Flu Vaccine Clinic
El Paso, Texas – The City of El Paso Department of Public Health will resume operations to distribute the 2009 H1N1 Flu vaccine at a mass vaccination clinic on Tuesday (November 24, 2009).
The vaccine will be given out by appointment only at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza, to individuals identified to be at high risk for developing complications arising from the 2009 H1N1 Flu. The target populations are:
Pregnant women
Persons who live with or provide care for infants younger than 6 months
Children and young adults aged 6 months to 24 years, and persons aged 25 through 64 who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for complications
Children receiving long term Aspirin Therapy
The vaccine will be offered free of charge. Due to the demand for the vaccine, the Department of Public Health is utilizing an appointment system to avoid having individuals wait in long lines to receive the vaccine. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Free parking at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza, will be made available only to those individuals with appointments.
“We consulted with colleagues from around the country and feel that giving the vaccine by appointment will minimize lines and help us to serve those most in need of the vaccine in the most comfortable manner,” said Michael Hill, Department of Public Health Director.
Individuals interested in making an appointment to receive the vaccine are asked to be patient when calling the Department of Public Health to make an appointment. The wait on the telephone to make an appointment may take several minutes.
To make an appointment to receive the 2009 H1N1 Flu vaccine, the public may call (915) 771-4565. The call center will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday (November 19, 2009) through Saturday (November 21, 2009). The call center will be closed on Sunday (November 22, 2009). Call center operations will resume on Monday (November 23, 2009).
Once sufficient amounts of these high risk groups have had the opportunity to receive the vaccine, the Department of Public Health intends to make the vaccine available to the general public.
For more information about the H1N1 Flu, the public may visit the city’s website at http://www.elpasotexas.gov/health/h1n1.asp or call 2-1-1.

japAN/AMerica: Anime, Manga, and Art
The El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA)
presents
japAN/AMerica: Anime, Manga, and Art
Thursday, November 19, 2009, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
at the El Paso Museum of Art, in the Energy Auditorium
Anime is an abbreviated pronunciation of "animation," referring to animation originating in Japan. Manga consists of comics and print cartoons that conform to a style developed in Japan in the late 20th century. Both have origins dating from as far back as the 18th and 19th centuries through the post-WWII era.
Stacy Schultz Ph.D, Assistant Professor of Art History at UTEP, and Polly Perez, Assistant Curator of Education at EPMA, will give a lecture and presentation about the emergence and influence of Japanese Anime and Manga in Contemporary Art and Culture, with an overview of Japanese Art that led to a unique aesthetic movement that seems to be taking over the world.
Anime and Manga are more than a pop-culture phenomenon but aesthetic works with long standing and profound historical and socio-cultural relevance in Japan, as well as a lucrative commercial export.
The presentation will feature a selection of images from Films, Narrative Fiction, Animation, Contemporary Art, Performance Art, and Art History - with particular focus on the work of Takashi Murakami as an example of the convergence of "Pop," History, and Art. The El Paso Museum of Art currently has a sculptural piece from Mr. Murakami on display in the Museum store with corresponding merchandise and books available for purchase.
Admission to this event is FREE.
Teachers, High School, and College students are encouraged to attend.
The El Paso Museum of Art educational programs are dedicated to presenting new insights about art to the community. Please call EPMA at 532-1707 ext. 23 for more information on this or other educational programming, or visit our website at www.elpasoartmuseum.org.
