SHERIFF’S OFFICIALS INVESTIGATING 1st HOMICIDE OUTSIDE CITY LIMITS FOR 2010

CRIMESCENEFABENS, TX- Late Tuesday night 08-24-10 at 9:50am, Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of N.W. in Fabens, Texas in reference to a subject down with gunshot wounds. Deputies arrived moments later to find a Hispanic woman run out of the home towards Deputies as she held on to her 4 year-old son in her arms. Deputies entered the residence & conducted a protective sweep of the home where they found an unresponsive male (Victim) lying on the floor with no signs of life.

The residence was secured by on scene Deputies and CID Crimes Against Persons Detectives were summoned to the scene. Detectives arrived on scene and began to canvass the area commencing their investigation.

Preliminary Investigation indicates that just before 10PM 08/24 – the Victim was at home with his wife & child at which time shots rang out. The Victim’s wife who was in the home  but did not witness the incident found her common law husband (Victim) on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. The Victim’s wife then called 911 & awaited for authorities to arrive. The Victim died at the scene as a result of his wounds.

 This marks the 1st Homicide outside El Paso City limits for 2010.

Sheriff Officials have identified the Victim as ALEJANDRO CASTRO (26) of Fabens, TX. Detectives are confirming at this time this Homicide is drug related but is unknown if this incident is directly linked to the drug cartels / border violence.  

Detectives are continuing with the investigation / No other information will be released at this time.

El Paso Zoo: Half Price Military, Fire and Law Enforcement Appreciation Day - August 21

El Paso, Texas – The El Paso Zoo will be holding its Military, Fire and Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 21.  In honor of those who serve and protect our community and our nation, ticket prices are at half off regular admission price.

We have invited our friends from local law enforcement agencies and fire departments, as well as soldiers from Fort Bliss to display the equipment they use on the job everyday.  Visitors will get to meet our local heroes and see what they do up-close!

The El Paso Zoo opens at 9:30 a.m. and the ticket booth closes at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

FREE PROSTATE CANCER SCREENINGS AT SMC, PMH and SPEMC in SEPTEMBER

Free Prostate Screenings
- Sierra Providence Health Network is offering a digital exam performed by a physician; lab draw and complete Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) study for men ages 50-70, and those 45+ with a family history and/or African American. As the leading cause of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death to men early prevention is important.

The free screening will be at the following locations.  Providence Memorial Hospital, located 2001 N. Oregon on Sept. 1st, from 8-11:30am in the auditoriums.  Sierra Providence East Medical Center, located 3280 Joe Battle on Sept. 18th, from 8-11am in the outpatient area.  Sierra Medical Center, located 1625 Medical Center on September 25th, from 8-11:30am in the outpatient area.
