TORNILLO RESIDENT SENTENCED FOR DECEPTIVE SALE OF HORSES

El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal today announced the sentencing of a resident of Tornillo accused of Deceptive Business Practices.

This morning 38-year-old Pedro Buentello pled guilty to 1 count of committing a Deceptive Business Practice, a crime of dishonesty punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine not to exceed $4,000.

According to the police complaint, on September 11, 2008 Buentello offered to sell the victim 45 horses for $2,850. A handwritten contract was signed and the victim paid Buentello $1,400, but the horses were never delivered and the money was never returned.

After accepting the guilty plea, County Court at Law #1 visiting Judge John L. Fashing sentenced Buentello to 300 days in jail.

“The County Attorney’s Office is committed to protect consumers from unscrupulous salesmen who prey on unsuspecting and trusting citizens of this community,” said El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal.

Danny Olivas to Kick-Off UTEP’s New NASA Space Exploration Center

Astronaut and UTEP alumnus Danny Olivas is coming to campus to celebrate the opening of UTEP’s new Center for Space Exploration Technology Research (cSETR) on Feb. 3.
Olivas will present an STS-128 flag and patch to be put on display at the new center. Both traveled to space on his most recent space shuttle mission, STS-128, last August.

UTEP was recently awarded a five-year, $5 million grant by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to establish multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific research that will contribute to NASA programs.
The UTEP Center for Space Exploration Technology Research will work closely with other NASA research facilities, including the Johnson Space Center in Houston and the White Sands Test Facility in Las Cruces, N.M. Research will include advanced capabilities in environmentally friendly propulsion technologies and the use of natural resources on other planets and the moon to create spacecraft fuel and other materials. UTEP faculty from the College of Engineering and the Department of Geological Sciences will collaborate on the research.

UTEP was one of six minority universities selected from 35 applicants for this grant.

The award comes via the NASA Group 5 University Research Center program, which fosters new aerospace science and technology concepts with a goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who receive degrees in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Danny Olivas’ visit to UTEP on Feb. 3
4:30 p.m. Olivas will give remarks during UTEP’s cSETR kick-off reception in the
College of Engineering Annex lobby. Members of NASA’s Technical Review Committee from the Johnson Space Center in Houston will attend the reception.

Black History Month Activities Focus on Taking Care of Business

From arts to athletics, from academics to politics, the activities scheduled during UTEP’s Black History Month celebration are tied around this year’s theme, “Economic Empowerment.”

The dozen free events on the University campus that begin Saturday, Jan. 30, will showcase the talents and rich, compelling history of the African-American culture. As to this year’s theme, organizers compare the business acumen of today’s leaders such as Oprah Winfrey, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and the late Reginald Lewis to slaves in the 1800s, who learned how to wheel-and-deal to the point where they operated plantations for their owners.

A good example of free enterprise was masterminded by nationally recognized basketball coach and UTEP graduate Nolan Richardson when he brought individuals together to excel at the highest level of athletic achievement when he led the University of Arkansas to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1994.

The coach will discuss “If It’s to Be, It’s Up to Me” from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center.

“Richardson is the quintessential entrepreneur,” said Maceo Dailey, Ph.D., chairman of the African American Studies program. “He exhibited the skills and the tools … the brilliance as an organizer and motivator.”

The other scheduled February lectures, presentations and films will have similar components that focus on the tenacity, vision and the belief in one’s self that have propelled African Americans to the top of their professions, Dailey said.
