UTEP Costumed Cadets To Lead Halloween Fun Run, Help Homeless Veterans

The University of Texas at El Paso’s ROTC Fighting Miner Battalion cadets will wake up the spirits during the 13th annual Halloween Costume Fun Run/Walk, which will start at 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the P-9 parking lot north of Kidd Field off of Glory Road.

“We do it for the esprit de corps and to see the different personalities of the cadets,” said Army Capt. Diana L. Williams, assistant professor of military science. “It’s something fun we do.”

This year’s free event will be open to the El Paso and UTEP communities. Organizers expect about 350 participants for the costumed footrace around campus.

Among the confirmed guest runners are Army Col. Ed Manning, the Fort Bliss garrison commander and UTEP cheerleaders.

Cadets request that participants donate canned goods, toiletries and gently-used men’s and women’s clothing—especially cold weather coats—to benefit the Veterans’ Outreach Program at the Opportunity Center, 1208 Myrtle Ave.

The program helps stabilize homeless veterans with a place to stay, food to eat and the chance to find a job or enroll in school. Every donation helps, said Julio Gutierrez, program coordinator.

“I’ll be there to walk,” he said. “We appreciate (the battalion’s) support. It keeps me from having to beg at the food pantries.”

The one-mile walk and two-mile run should finish in 35 minutes. It will be followed by a costume contest.

The winning civilians will get a goody bag filled with Army-related gifts. Military winners will get gift certificates from Chili’s Grill & Bar or Cinemark USA movie theaters. The group that supplies the most donations will receive a plaque.

Planners realize that busy schedules could keep some participants away, but they ask people to drop off any items that could benefit the Veterans’ Outreach Program. Cadets plan to place drop-off boxes at the Union Building, the University Bookstore and the University Library.

Community Meeting to Discuss Students and Cyber Safety

State Representative Quintanilla, AT&T and Americas High School Host Community Meeting to Discuss Students and Cyber Safety

WHO: Representative Quintanilla, Americas High School Principal David Pena, Marsali Hancock, President of iKeepSafe (an online safety organization), and Deputy Sheriff Michael Armstrong, Texas DARE Training Coordinator (Bios provided)

WHAT: Introduction, to parents and students, of private sector initiatives to help students manage and protect their digital reputations.

WHEN: Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 6:30-8:00PM.

WHERE: Americas High School, 12101 Pellicano

El Paso, TX--Prior to the legislative session which convened earlier this year, Representative Quintanilla received a plea from a parent whose child had become a victim of sexting. The parent asked him to consider legislation that would assist parents and children in preventing others from falling victim to this and other internet dangers.

"After extensive conversation with legislative attorneys, fellow House members and cell phone companies, I realized amending the law would not be the answer to this major problem," Quintanilla said. "This community meeting is the product of many discussions with the telecommunications industry about my concerns for the young people who are vulnerable to the permanent pitfalls of sexting and other internet actions."

The program is a collaborative of iKeepsafe, AT&T and the American School Counselor Association. The intent of the collaborative is to prepare teens to protect and manage their digital reputations(see attached press release).

"It is my hope that this community meeting will be the start of a serious dialogue in El Paso between parents and teens on the dangers of permanently harming a student's opportunity to attend the best university or to gain the best employment. There is nothing I can do to reverse the consequences for the child of the parent with whom I spoke before the session. This is our effort toward honoring that request," said Quintanilla.

Department of Public Health Collaborates with Local Hospitals for Flu Preparations

El Paso, Texas – October 23, 2009 - Throughout the United States, doctor’s offices and hospitals have seen higher rates of influenza-like illness than expected for this time of year. The same trend is being observed in El Paso.

In collaboration with public and private healthcare agencies, the Department of Public Health would like to take this opportunity to prepare the community for the possible opening of alternate care sites at all local hospitals. These alternate care sites are internal or external facilities located on hospital property whose main purpose is to prevent the critical patients in the emergency rooms from being exposed to the flu and further complicating their conditions. These facilities will be climate controlled and if you do arrive at a hospital for influenza-like illness, please look for signs directing you to the alternate care sites. These sites have the additional benefit of allowing healthcare workers to move quickly to evaluate and treat patients who present with symptoms of influenza.

The establishment of alternate care sites is a common practice for addressing situations where there are larger- than-usual numbers of patients presenting at hospitals. Because they have seen larger volumes of influenza-like illness than we have in El Paso, hospitals in other Texas cities such as Austin, Dallas and Houston have already implemented this practice. As flu cases continue to increase, El Paso is preparing to follow a similar model.

The Department of Public Health Director, Michael Hill says that these plans are not unusual, “hospitals have plans for many types of events and have trained to prepare their facilities to take care of the public in situations such like this,” Hill said.

Dr. Hector Ocaranza, Health Authority for the Department of Public Health states that it is important to remain calm and reminds the public about a few points regarding influenza-like illness.

Treatment for influenza-like illness is given by physicians on a case-by-case basis and most will be resolved with time. Symptoms of influenza-like illness are:
Fever
Cough
Sore throat
Abdominal pain
Vomiting
Headache

If you have the above symptoms, follow these recommendations from Dr. Ocaranza:
Drink plenty of fluids (water, Pedialyte)
Get plenty of rest
Stay home from work or school until 24 hours after the fever has subsided without the help of fever-reducers
Fever-reducers or other medications as advised by your physician
Avoid aspirin and compounds containing acetylsalicylic acid (like Pepto-Bismol)
Avoid overcrowding emergency rooms and doctor’s offices

Seek medical care if you have the following symptoms:
Problems breathing
Not drinking or eating
Decreased activity
Feeling worse as days go by

Seek emergency care and call 911 if the following symptoms appear:
Bluish discoloration
Pale complexion
Rapid breathing
Difficulty waking up

Lastly, area hospitals ask that before you arrive at their facility, please call ahead to inquire on their visitor’s policy. Some hospitals are taking further measures to decrease the spread of disease by not allowing minors as visitors.

Found: Owners of $147 Million in Lost Money

(AUSTIN) — Many Texans had more money in their pockets after Texas Comptroller Susan Combs returned a record $147 million in unclaimed property to its owners in fiscal 2009, a 19 percent increase compared to fiscal 2008.

Combs has expanded her agency’s efforts to locate unclaimed property owners, producing an 18 percent increase in the number of claims filed in fiscal 2009, compared to the previous year. Nearly 49,000 owners reclaimed $100 – $500; about 15,000 owners reclaimed $500 – $1,000; and 17,385 claimed more than $1,000.

During the Texas State Fair, open through Oct. 18 in Dallas, hundreds more unclaimed property owners will discover forgotten funds by searching the unclaimed property list at the Comptroller’s annual exhibit in the Grand Place Building, near the giant figure of Big Tex.

“The current balance in the state’s unclaimed property fund is $2 billion, and that is far too much unclaimed money,” Combs said. “That money belongs to Texans, and I know reclaiming it would make a difference to many people in these tough times. We’re making every effort to let folks know about their unclaimed property and help them claim it.”

Those efforts include searching the unclaimed property list at conventions, festivals, sporting events and other venues that attract large crowds — in addition to the longstanding exhibit at the State Fair. The Comptroller has added temporary staff to process simple claims from original owners of unclaimed property, freeing veteran staff to handle complex claims. An average of 2,000 simple claims are processed each week.

Not all unclaimed property belongs to individuals and businesses. City and county governments owned $1.6 million of the money reclaimed in fiscal 2009. The Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property and Local Government Assistance teams have begun a collaborative outreach effort to inform local officials about potential revenue from the unclaimed property fund.

“Local governments are facing financial challenges,” Combs said. “When we receive money that clearly belongs to a city or county, we contact them immediately and encourage them to claim it.”

In fiscal 2009, the Comptroller returned money to about 357 cities and 211 counties.

It is easy to search the unclaimed property database and reclaim forgotten funds at www.claimittexas.org
