Each year at homecoming, The University of Texas at El Paso and the UTEP Alumni Association celebrate outstanding alumni whose contributions to their professions, communitiesand alma mater shine as an example of excellence for future generations of Miners.
This year, four exceptional alumni will be honored with the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award - UTEP’s highest honor - at the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the Don Haskins Center. Recipients will receive a medallion and plaque of recognition.
The reception and dinner also will recognize 10 notable individuals from the University’s colleges and the School of Nursing by presenting them with the Gold Nugget Award.

The 2009 Distinguished Alumni are: Victor M. Mendez, leader, Federal Highway Administration; Willarda V. Edwards, M.D., president, National Medical Association; Victor Arias Jr., senior client partner, Korn/Ferry International; and Vernon G. Hunt (posthumously), geologist and oil pioneer.
The 2009 Gold Nugget Award recipients are: Francisco S. “Pancho” Uranga, College of Business Administration; Pauline A. Dow and Paulette Wingo, College of Education; Oscar E. Venegas, College of Engineering; Sandy Hatfield Clubb, College of Health Sciences; Alfredo Corchado Jimenez, College of Liberal Arts; Barbara J. Bruno and Cindy A. Stout, School of Nursing; and Jim W. Handschy and Larry R. Wollschlager, College of Science.
